photo: Ivan Jelisavcic

We were pleasantly surprised at the large number of protesters who came out to support the movement. I want to estimate the crowd at the rally at around 2,000–3,000 people. The police presence surrounding the rally was actually very helpful and respectful. About a dozen anti-gay protesters showed up, including Matt Barber of the Liberty Council and Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth about Homosexuality. After about an hour of speeches the organizers announced that we were ready to march.

The march initially started with the police funneling us down the sidewalks as we made our way towards Millennium Park from Federal Plaza. When the group I was with reached Millennium Park, the lead marchers had already moved onto the now shutdown Madison Street. It was immediately evident that the march had now become much larger than when we originally started because I could see marchers as far as the eye could see. The march continued to wind its way through the Loop passing by City Hall, awestruck shoppers on State St., ABC 7 studios, and then north out of the Loop towards Michigan Ave. Along the way I would estimate we picked up another 1,000 marchers so that by the time the group reached Michigan Ave., we had a formidable group. We received much support from onlookers who cheered us and honked their horns in support. We managed to shut down a busy Michigan Ave., with marchers stretching down the northbound lanes of Michigan Avenue's busy shopping district.
